A Brief Overview Of Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration Systems

A Brief Overview Of Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
By Caitlina Fuller

Ammonia refrigeration systems are used quite frequently in facilities that provide industrial refrigeration. The ammonia used is actually anhydrous and there are many different types of foods, drugs, beers, ice creams, and more that we all enjoy on a regular basis kept in industrial refrigeration cooled by ammonia.

In fact, many things you use or eat on a daily basis were kept in ammonia refrigeration systems at some point in time before they made their way to your home. Other items that are used in ammonia refrigeration systems on a regular basis include fruit juice and soft drinks in their processing facilities, wineries, processing facilities for meats, fish, and poultry. Also petrochemical facilities and cold storage warehouses use ammonia refrigeration systems.

Ammonia refrigeration systems are not completely safe, however. Workers in processing plants are at risk of being exposed to ammonia spills. Ammonia is very dangerous to workers and it may cause many problems. Ammonia may affect workers through inhalation, skin contact, explosion, and even fires. As a result process hazard analysis is very important and companies focus on this for process safety management. Safeguards are important and must be kept in place at all times to ensure safety. Ammonia is a hazard and it must be handled properly.

Worker protection is very important because ammonia is so dangerous. In the past workers have been injured and even killed working in facilities with ammonia refrigeration. Liquid contact or vapor from ammonia may cause injuries or even kill employees so that is why it is so important to keep industrial refrigerators in proper order at all times. Otherwise catastrophic consequences may result. In fact, there are many programs developed by OSHA to assist companies using industrial refrigeration to keep employees safe. For example, OSHA discusses vent pipes and their failures to help companies realize where problems may arise. The same goes for inspection systems and how important they are to keep up to date and constant in companies using anhydrous ammonia.

OSHA has also recommended that all workers in industrial refrigeration plants wear protective clothing in order to protect them in case of a spill, leak, or other similar event. OSHA has also published information on fire safety, respiratory protection, control of hazardous energy, personal protective equipment, and the like.

With OSHA playing a role in ammonia refrigeration and how it is managed companies and employees are all kept safer. That is the most important thing and thanks to OSHA employees working with ammonia refrigerant are now safer than ever.

Caitlina Fuller writes about scienc and technology. Ammonia refrigeration systems are used quite frequently in various industries and facilities that provide industrial refrigeration. The ammonia used is actually anhydrous and there are many different types of foods, drugs, beers, ice creams, and more that we all enjoy on a regular basis kept in industrial refrigeration cooled by ammonia.

Heavy Duty Lab & Pharmacy Refrigerators

Heavy Duty Lab & Pharmacy Refrigerators
By Arpita Chaudhary

The refrigeration requirement for laboratories and pharmacies is higher than household requirements. Therefore, a Lab & Pharmacy Refrigerator becomes a necessary addition for such setups. These refrigerators are heavy-duty units that are capable of maintaining very low temperatures.

The Laboratory and Pharmacy refrigerators can be classified into four different types namely the Standard Laboratory & Pharmacy Refrigerators, Chromatography Refrigerators, Pass-Thru Refrigerators and Laboratory & Pharmacy Refrigerators with Drawers.

These refrigerators are all U.L. listed units. They vary in size from a small 24 cubic feet unit to large 85 cubic feet units. The small units are single door units and the large ones have two or three doors. These are suitable for maintaining temperatures form -1 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius or -2 degrees Celsius to10 degrees Celsius.

Some important things to kept in mind before buying a suitable refrigerator include:

  • Decide what the unit is going to be used for and the size required

  • If the contents inside the refrigerator need to be on display, select a glass door unit. Otherwise, but one that ha a solid door

  • Some standard features to look for in a Lab & Pharmacy Refrigerator include, forced air cooling, automatic defrost, digital temperature control, quiet operation and door locks

  • A unit with an in-built alarm system is effective. If the door of the refrigerator is left open accidentally, the alarm goes off

  • Always buy the refrigerator that has a good, reliable brand name. This ensures quality and after sales service
  • Once the lab medicines and other important medical items are kept inside the refrigerator and the unit has been put to use, certain guidelines should be followed to ensure effective functioning. For example:

  • Record maximum/minimum temperature twice a day to keep a check on performance

  • Unplug or switch off the unit only for cleaning

  • Leave space between the stock stored for good circulation of air

  • Do not keep the refrigerator door open for long

  • Do not store drinks and food in pharmacy refrigerator

  • Keep the door of the unit locked so that only the authorized people can open the refrigerator
  • The Lab & Pharmacy Refrigerators are a must for medical setups. They keep the reagents, enzymes and vaccines well preserved.

A Brief Introduction To Industrial Refrigeration

A Brief Introduction To Industrial Refrigeration
    By Caitlina Fuller

When people hear the word refrigeration they immediately think of the refrigerator in their kitchen. However there are actually quite a few different kinds of refrigeration out there and they each have their own methods of functioning. One particular type of refrigeration is industrial refrigeration. This type of refrigeration is typically used for cold storage, food processing, and chemical processing.

The equipment is very large and made of industrial stainless steel. These refrigerators don’t look anything like the refrigerator in your kitchen! These refrigerators are 25kW to 40MW making them more powerful than even commercial refrigerators. There are quite a few different items that need industrial refrigeration and these items are perishable if not kept at a particular temperature. That is why industrial refrigerators are so important and why these refrigerators must maintain specific temperatures at all time.

Industrial refrigeration, which frequently uses ammonia refrigeration to maintain temperatures, is necessary for computers, foodstuffs, blood, vaccines, and quite a few other goods that must maintain a constant and steady temperature at all times. Temperatures that are too high or too low may spoil certain goods or ruin them. As a result industrial refrigeration is especially important and maintaining temperatures is as well. Since temperature is so important to industrial refrigeration companies offering this service must pay attention at all times to the temperature of the industrial refrigerators.

If at any time the temperature begins to vary immediate action must be taken in order to ensure the goods are not negatively impacted. It is also very important for these companies to have generators or backup energy sources to keep the industrial refrigerators running at all times. Too much is riding on the refrigerators maintaining their temperatures and if they do not losses will be considerable.

Of course, these industrial refrigeration companies also need insurance to cover any losses in any case that the refrigeration systems go out. This is imperative for the industrial refrigeration company because they are responsible for the goods in their refrigerators. Big losses occur when computers, blood, vaccines, and the like go bad so these companies must protect themselves.

As long as the proper temperatures are maintained there is little loss or waste and the refrigeration company keeps its customers. Overall the basics of industrial refrigeration is to maintain correct temperatures and keep goods at the right temperature at all times.

    Refrigeration Compressors

    Refrigeration Compressors
    By Thomas Morva

Refrigeration compressors are a special type of compressor used for refrigeration, heat pumping, and air conditioning. Those compressors are large mechanical units, designed to be the core of industrial and air conditioning systems. Small, portable compressors do not fit into this category.

Refrigeration compressors are designed to turn low-pressure gases into high-pressure and high-temperature gases. Additionally, technically speaking, they are also used to maintain a low boiling point. This is achieved by removing vapor from the evaporator. There are three main types of refrigeration compressors.

The first type of refrigeration compressor is the screw compressor. Screw compressors pass the refrigerant vapor through screw spindles. Each screw spindle compresses the intake of gas. Although there are refrigeration compressors with multiple spindles, most screw compressors have just two screw spindles.

The second type of refrigeration compressor is the scroll compressor. Scroll compressors achieve a lower rate of leakage and therefore are more efficient. They are the most common type of refrigeration compressors on the market.

The third type of refrigeration compressor is the piston compressor. These compressors achieve high pressure levels and are mostly used for commercial purposes. Piston compressors are also known as reciprocating compressors.

Though other types of refrigeration compressors exist aside from the main three described above, they fit only very specific situations and are usually not very effective. These types are less common and their usage is very rare.

To sum it up, refrigeration compressors are large modules aimed at refrigeration, heat pumping, and air conditioning of large facilities. They should not be confused with small, stand-alone compressors. The three main types are of refrigeration compressors screw compressors, scroll compressors, and piston or reciprocating compressors. Out of these three, scroll compressors are the most efficient, while reciprocating compressors are used for heavy industrial purposes.

Compressors provides detailed information on Air Compressors , Compressor Parts, Compressors, Gas Compressors and more. Compressors is affiliated with Electric Pressure Washers.

    Maintaining Your Industrial Refrigeration License

    Maintaining Your Industrial Refrigeration License
    By Caitlina Fuller

Many states do not recognize industrial refrigeration licenses from other states. So, if you are moving to a new state and want to keep your ammonia refrigeration license then you will need to renew it in the new state of residence. That is unless there is reciprocity in the state you are moving to, and that is unlikely. For those individuals who have changed companies and want to change the name of the company on their license then it is important to call and make the change. Most states offer a Change of Trade Name form that may be downloaded off the Internet. Another question many individuals certified to work on industrial refrigeration equipment have is whether or not they can transfer their personal license to their company's name. The vast majority of states do not allow this and licenses are offered to individuals only. Company names may be added to the license but cannot replace the individual's license.

Another issue that arises with industrial refrigeration technicians is whether or not they should renew their license if they know they will not be working on equipment for a year. Most states will allow a license lapse of one year with a small renewal fee. However, when a license lapses for two years or more then the technician is required to take and pass the licensing exam for a second time. So, license renewal is usually cheaper. That is unless you are not planning on working on refrigeration equipment for many years. Overall, it is recommended to keep the license up to date.

And, in case you were wondering whether or not you really need a refrigeration license, you do. As long as you are working on, repairing, installing, or maintaining industrial, commercial, or transport refrigeration equipment you must be licensed to do so or at the very least being supervised by a licensed individual. If you have not become certified as of yet but you would like your industrial refrigeration license then you need to take a contractor's exam in your state. Most states schedule these through the Board office, but you should check with your state first. You can most likely look up your state on the Internet and find the application and download it. You must mail the application in with the appropriate fee. In order to be eligible to take the exam you must have a minimum of 4000 hours working with industrial refrigeration equipment.

Most of us go to the store to buy our food, medicine, and even electronics without a second thought to industrial refrigeration. However, ammonia refrigeration systems actually play a big role in many of the products we buy every single day. The majority of people have no idea that ammonia refrigeration is so prevalent in industries and how important it really is. Not to mention the way ammonia refrigeration actually work.

Many companies use these systems as an integral part of quality management. The ammonia in the refrigeration systems allows these refrigerators to maintain very specific temperatures at very constant levels. This is important for many industries because their products must maintain a certain temperature. When temperatures fluctuate it could wreak havoc on some items efficacy like prescription drugs or it could affect the quality of items like electronics. Temperature of course plays an important role in foods and those not kept at constant and specific temperatures could easily spoil.

Some of the industries that use ammonia refrigeration systems on a daily basis include wineries, fish and poultry processing plants, breweries, and meat processing plants, the dairy industry, fruit juice processors, fish processing plants, and vegetable processors. There are many more industries that utilize these types of refrigerators as well, these are just some of the more prevalent ones. Others include cold storage warehouses, petrochemical processing plants, ship processors, and the like.

And, while ammonia refrigeration systems have so many benefits and they are used so often in so many industries it is hard to imagine there is any danger associated with them. However, there are some danger issues involved and they must be recognized by industries and employees working with these systems. The Process Management Standard covers all ammonia refrigeration systems that use more than 10,000 pounds. Also, industries using this type of refrigeration must have safety protocol in the event of an accident. There is always a chance that something will go wrong and because of this industries must have this safety protocol in place. That way, employees will know how to handle the situation and the accident will have as minimal damages as possible. The safety protocol modules should be very specific and include information on the pressure and pipes, condensers, machine rooms, and refrigeration areas. Employees should review this information on a regular basis to ensure they are knowledgeable on safety procedures.
